[Game Review] The Legend of Zelda (Wii Virtual Console, NES)

NES Legend of ZeldaOverview:

System: Wii Virtual NES
Developer: Nintendo R&D4
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Adventure

Originally released in 1987 on the Nintendo Entertainment System, The Legend of Zelda was a bold new design from the now-legendary Shigeru Miyamoto. The game shipped with a gold cartridge and a revolutionary ability to save a game’s progress via batter power. Sporting a huge overworld to explore, tons of dungeons and bosses to vanquish, and yet another blond princess to rescue, Miyamoto’s new game went on to become one of the most influential titles in the industry.

Since its release, there have been many sequels, spinoffs, character cameo appearances, and even a philosophical book, but there is only one original. This game is where the greatest franchise in video game history was born. Continue reading

PackRat Paragraphs: Tekken: The Motion Picture (Factory Sealed VHS)

tekkenthemotionpictureEveryone with even a passing knowledge of fighting games knows Tekken. It has been one of the best fighting game franchises since the original PlayStation. But did you know that there was also an animated motion picture based off of the games?

Probably not. It was released in 1997 to drab reviews and pathetic sales and shortly after released on DVD, but that format also failed to garner decent sales due to the fact that the movie supposedly blows. I’ve never seen it and will never watch this copy, but if I ever find a DVD in a yard sale anywhere I’ll be sure to watch it and let you guys know how bad it really is.

I’ve found open copies going for as high as about 20 bucks on ebay, and factory sealed items are always worth more. I figure it’s worth about 40 bucks to a casual collector, which is a good chunk of profit over the $5.99 I spent on it.

What Current Generation Consoles do Most Everyview Readers Own?

It’s finally time to put the stops on our most recent poll. The question this time was “What Current Gen Gaming System do You Currently Own?” Nothing too surprising, but here they are.

  1. Nintendo Wii (26 votes)
  2. Xbox 360 (24 v0tes)
  3. Playstation 3 (15 votes)
  4. None, I’m Poor (7 votes)
  5. None, Gaming is for Kiddies (1 vote)

I honestly expected the 360 to finish in the lead with the Wii in a close second, that was the only real surprise. The results from this poll are going to be used to know which video game reviews will be most helpful to you guys, so thanks to the few of you (only 73 in all) who voted. And as always, keep reading Everyview!

“Mario Kart Love Song” by Sam Hart

I just wanted to let all you guys know about this. It’s a great song by Sam Hart relating passionate and romantic relationships to the Mario Kart, the greatest casual racing title ever. The lyrics are brilliant and the melody is catchy, and it’s a really good song overall, I hope you guys enjoy it.

Thanks to the lovely Kim Boland, my own wonderful Princess Toadstool for showing this video to me. Smooches.

Review: Health Energy Potion

health-energy-potionOverview:

Health Potion is from the same company that brought you Mana, the original Energy Shot meant to look like it came straight out of a video game, which is an idea I love. Combining two of the greatest inventions of all time into one is always a good idea. Well, almost. Anyway, Health Potion uses a unique blend of herbs and ditches the overused Berry or Citrus flavors often found in energy shots for a Cinnamon Apple taste.

Oh, and it replenishes 160 HP.

Review: Pirates: The Key of Dreams (WiiWare)

pirates-the-key-of-dreamsOverview:

Publisher: Oxygen Games
Players: 1-4
Genre: Action
Cost: 1000 Points

A 10 dollar game about pirates? Hell yeah, sign me up! Along with zombies, ninjas and Hulk Hogan, Pirates are one of the many things God put on Earth to make life for us mere laymen more worth living. Unfortunately this may not be the game you want it to be. When I first heard of it I didn’t think there was any way it could be anything other than awesome. Well here we are, ten bucks later, and I can readily admit that I was horribly wrong.

We Support Winter

winter-wii-gameNot the season, though I do love sledding and throwing snowballs at the elderly. Winter is a recently discovered game from n-Space, the people behind the Gamecube’s underwhelming horror-themed shooter entitled Geist. The game was cancelled for various reasons, the biggest of which was no one wanted to publish it due to the alleged lack of hardcore interest among the Wii gamers.

Winter was a Wii exclusive horror game, a genre the Wii demographic is almost starving for alongside RPGs, set in a small mid-western town which has encountered a very unusual snow storm, hence the name Winter. The game looks very promising and a petition has been started by Wii gamers to get the game published. We support the game and you should too. To sign the petition simply click here or use the picture link near the bottom of the left sidebar.

Retro-Review: Frogger (Arcade)

frogger arcade originalOverview:

Frogger was one of the biggest names in the gaming industry back in the day, and it still is to some extent. The simple concept of guiding a busy little froggy from point A to point B without being squished, getting eaten, or drowning in a river was one that proved to be rather addictive and claimed more than it’s fair share of quarters. That was when arcades were still the cool place to hang out, back before LAN parties, the internet, and socially inept fat kids with acne and gland disorders ruled the gaming landscape. Well, those fat kids existed, but not internet.

Anyway, I thought it might be fun to take a look way back at one of the biggest names in the arcade industry and one that held influence for years after the first quarter was dropped into it’s metallic guts. Enjoy!

Review: Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)

left4dead

Overview:

System: Xbox 360 (also on: PC)
Developer: Valve/Certain Affinity
Publisher: Valve/EA
Genre: FPS/Survival Horror

If you’ll think back (or link back if you can’t remember) you might recall a couple of zombie movies I reviewed. The first was a film consisting of fast paced zombie action with lots of blood, gore, and huge portions of pure, unadulterated awesome. This film was called Dawn of the Dead. The second flick featured slow, stupid zombies that couldn’t scare a retarded blind cheerleader. This movie was called Land of the Dead. Thankfully, like the former listed, Left 4 Dead ditches the old myth that zombies are bumbling morons and replaces it with the more recent idea that zombies are lightning fast and extremely deadly. I love zombies.

Review: Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii)

Overview:

System: Wii
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Life Simulation / heroin

animal-crossing-wii

Ahh, Animal Crossing. Ask just about anyone who has set foot into the virtual world full of furry citizens and they’ll most likely be able to sum their experiences up in one word: addiction. I’m not sure what it is, but doing odd jobs for Joey the Duck to get goodies to sell to pay off your mortgage to Tom Nook for your overpriced piece of crap house is simply addicting. Well it was the first time around way back on the GameCube, anyway. The DS version was a little less heavy hitting, and now here we are with the Wii. Does Animal Crossing: City Folk stick the heroin filled needle of city life into your gamer vein, or is it time to find a new drug? I mean game.
