Resident Evil 5 Review (Xbox 360)

Overview:

Xbox360_owp_NA3rdParty_CSCapcom’s long running Resident Evil series has been in my top three favorite gaming franchises for a long time, ranking right up there with Zelda and Mario. With an outstanding history of high-quality games (with the exception of a few titles), it’s easy to see why. Not to mention zombies.

Resident Evil 5 quickly became my most anticipated game for 2008. Then 2009. It takes after its revolutionary predecessor, the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 4, and ditches the traditional slow-moving gameplay, tank-like controls, and super restricted ammo counts in favor of fast-paced action more akin to recent zombie movies. Oh, speaking of zombies, it also gets rid of those.

You know how usually when you grab a bag of Taco flavored chips, they don’t really taste like tacos? Instead they possess a flavor that has been established as the official artificial taco flavor for potato-based snacks? Well those days are over, my friends, and it’s all thanks to Doritos.

The new Late Night Tacos at Midnight flavored Doritos are pure evolution in the most evolutionary manner possible. No longer must we settle for tortilla chips that claim to be the flavor of authentic Mexican cuisine. No longer must we take the lies fed to us in the form of salt and artificial seasoning on top of a corn chip. We now have something to believe in, the future of all snacking. When Nintendo released the original DS, they got a lot of flak for being such an ugly, fat little thing. They eventually released the DS Lite, which was exactly what the original DS (the DS Phat) should have been to begin with. It was sleek, sexy, and had beautifully high quality screens. Still, though, there were criticisms about the lack of gadgetry of the system. Introducing the Nintendo DSi, the third generation of dual screen gaming. It may not be the revolutionary system the GameBoy was, and I still wouldn’t call it a gadget, but it’s finally a step in the high tech direction.

Sega is really doing big things with Nintendo’s little white box. Though the two were, at one time, mortal enemies, the house that Sonic built is quickly becoming one of the biggest third-party supporters behind Nintendo’s system. The House of the Dead: Overkill treated Wii gamers to a zombie-blasting bloodbath. The upcoming title The Conduit is a game everyone is talking about. And here we are with MadWorld, one of the most stylish, violent, funny, and just pure bad ass games of this generation on any system.

Retro Review: Valomilk Candy Cups

Have you ever noticed some of the best things around start out as accidents? Potato chips, beer, Popsicles and myself are some of the more notable ones, but now we have another one to add to the list of accidents that resulted in something amazing. Valomilk Candy Cups, invented in 1931, were a total mistake. It took the genius and innovative mind of Henry Sifers to put a ruined batch of marshmallow to work and make a totally delicious candy treat that were enjoyed for half a century before, sadly, being shut down and yanked away from candy lovers throughout the country.

But thankfully the Sifers family reacquired the original equipment used to manufacture the delicious candies that left a trail on everyone’s face and began production again. Even in today’s high tech world Valomilk is made completely by hand which produces a delicious candy that focuses on quality over quantity. A real treat.

Review: Power Horse Energy Drink

Power Horse Energy Drink is best known for its role in the 2008 assassin film Wanted. Like Brawndo, it’s another energy drink you know from a film but probably had no idea existed in reality, so I’m here to tell you all about it. And like Brawndo, you very likely won’t find it in stores but I’ve got the hook up. While it’s true the people behind Power Horse didn’t send me samples to review, my good buddy Mike Bricker recently ordered a case off the internet and was kind enough to give me a can for review. *Internet Hug*

So does Power Horse prove to be an energy drink worth your hard earned cash or is it just a worthless novelty drink from Austria? Yeah, Austria.

Retro-Review: Dexter Freebish “A Life of Saturdays”

“Wait, Dexter Who? I’ve never heard of ’em, sorry.”

“A Life of Saturdays” was the 2000 debut album put out by the Austin, Texas band Dexter Freebish who won the 1999 John Lennon Songwriting Competition with their first hit single “Leaving Town” which was a top 40 hit on the radios and its video was played almost constantly on VH1 for a good while.

And if you’re wondering about the band’s name, they originally as The Twigs but was later changed to Dexter Freebish. The name itself was taken from a roller coaster ride at Astroworld theme park in Houston, Texas called Dexter Frebish’s Electric Roller Ride.

So is Dexter Freebish’ “A Life of Saturdays” an album you should pull from the dusty shelves at the back of your mind or is it a memory better off lost alongside the memories of your fourth grade bully making you throw up then force-feeding it back to you?
