[Movie Review] Where The Wild Things Are (Theatrical)

Maurice Sendak’s Children’s Book Where The Wild Things Are is a staple of young childhood in the United States, as well as all across the world. A simple book containing fanciful illustrations of an imaginary world created when the main character, Max, gets sent to bed without his dinner. The book very concisely describes the adventure of Max and his imagination.

Since the book is fewer than 20 pages, I was curious to see what the film added to the book to create the cinematic experience. It turns out that not only did they add more material, but they also added a wealth of character development, emotion, and visual sensation to ensure everyone in the audience went home with a smile. [Movie Review] Whip It! (Theatrical)

This movie has been on my radar for a few months now, and I was surprised to see the horrific Box-Office performance it had its opening week. I’m not sure what the factor was. Here, you have a very positively reviewed film with an indie film darling, and a completely fresh movie.

I’m usually not one for movies with all-female or strong female casts, and that’s not because I’m sexist. It’s because, as a viewer, I have a tough time sympathizing (usually) with female characters. Probably because after 24 years on this earth, I still have no idea how they think. It makes it tough to have a visceral reaction in a lot of films due to that lag of knowledge of my opposite sex. [Doubleshot Movie Review] Zombieland (Theatrical)

In this Doubleshot Review, Everyview EIC Zac Pritcher and newcomer Brandon Majors (who is not related to Andrew) went on a romantic date to catch the highly anticipated Zombedy film Zombieland in theaters. Popcorn, soda pop, and blue slushies in-hand, the boys prepared for what they hoped would be the first successful mainstream zombie-comedy since Shaun of the Dead.

Pro tip: It blows Shaun of the Dead out of the bloody, corpse-ridden water. Continue reading

[Movie Review] Away We Go (DVD)

away_we_goAnyone know who Sam Mendes is? The director of such films as American Beauty, Jarhead, and my personal favorite, Road to Perdition delivers this incredibly under the radar movie about to expecting parents (The Office’s John Krasinski and SNL’s Maya Rudolph) who realize they aren’t bound by anything in their current lives, and can choose to raise their daughter anywhere they want.

The film follows Bert and Verona on their journey across North America, trying to find the best possible place to raise a child. They head to Phoenix, where their old “friends” live. There they find a largely dysfunctional crew, (including a CRIMINALLY underused Jim Gaffigan), and hot weather, and easily decide this isn’t the place to be. Continue reading

[Movie News] Paranormal Activity, Demand It!

Don’t you just love those movies that are made with a budget under 100,000 dollars and kick the shit out of most other movies that have huge budgets. Flashback to 1999 when the little movie The Blair Witch Project came out. A film that was originally produced with around 16,000 dollars and blew everyone away. Then there is movies like the upcoming Jame’s Cameron’s Avatar which has a budget of 288,000,000 Washingtons. Man, we are all praying that movie will be good, not for our sake, but for his.

But I digress, apparently the movie Paranormal Activitiy, which is included in that low budget movie market, made with only 11,000 dollars, premiered at the Screamfest Film Festival in 2007 and at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2008, and has been released at limited theaters this month. The movie has been receiving extremely high ratings from fans and critics scoring a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Continue reading

[Movie News] Brave New World: In Theaters?

brave-new-worldWell, I suppose you could say I’m shooting for a particular theme lately, that being popular books being adapted to screen. I first gave you loyal Everyviewers the trailer for Tucker Max’s “I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell” that is slated for release this September.

I just stumbled upon another book-to-screen adaptation that actually tickles my fancy quite a bit as well, and that is the news of a potential Big Screen Adaptation of Brave New World, the 1932 classic novel by Alduous Huxley.

The project has apparently been on Director/Producer Ridley Scott’s radar for the better part of 2 decades, and it’s strongly rumored that if a script were up to his lofty standards, we could actually see Leonardo DiCaprio himself star in this movie.

Here’s a little bit more information about the potential film:

I hate to admit this, but I am pretty chubbed up just thinking about this. If done right, this could be an EPIC film to go along with a WONDERFUL book.

Now, if I could only get J.D. Salinger to give me the rights to write, direct, and star in The Catcher in the Rye…

[Movie News] Oscar’s Expand Best Picture Nominees From 5 to 10

The OscarsFucking stupid.

Even the biggest of movie buffs hate the Oscars due to the fact they are tortuously dull, so who in the bloody fuck thinks it’s a good idea to not only increase the Best Picture Nominees, but to double them and make the awful program even longer? I’m sure a lot of this has to do with the Best Picture snubbing of “The Dark Night” last year, but seriously, even if this does increase the chances for blockbuster movies, like “Star Trek” or Andrew Majors’ favorite film “Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen” to get nominated, it doesn’t actually much improve their chances of winning. “Let The Right One In” Film Review

ltroi3Overview:

I generally am not someone who enjoys watching horror movies. In fact, I would say it’s my least favorite movie genre. I do however like to appear smarter than I actually am by flaunting my appreciation of critically acclaimed films. So when I saw Rotten Tomatoes had a whopping 98% rating for the Swedish vampire flick “Let The Right One In,” I felt obliged to check it out. Not only was it bursting with acclaim, but it was also foreign, thus doubling my chances of looking like a film scholar. Well, luckily for me and my pursuits of fraudulent intellectualism, the film is very deserving of its critical praise.

PackRat Paragraphs: Tekken: The Motion Picture (Factory Sealed VHS)

tekkenthemotionpictureEveryone with even a passing knowledge of fighting games knows Tekken. It has been one of the best fighting game franchises since the original PlayStation. But did you know that there was also an animated motion picture based off of the games?

Probably not. It was released in 1997 to drab reviews and pathetic sales and shortly after released on DVD, but that format also failed to garner decent sales due to the fact that the movie supposedly blows. I’ve never seen it and will never watch this copy, but if I ever find a DVD in a yard sale anywhere I’ll be sure to watch it and let you guys know how bad it really is.

I’ve found open copies going for as high as about 20 bucks on ebay, and factory sealed items are always worth more. I figure it’s worth about 40 bucks to a casual collector, which is a good chunk of profit over the $5.99 I spent on it.

Review: Sex Drive (2008)

Overview:

SexDriveA lot of people haven’t heard of Sex Drive for some reason, so I’m gonna go ahead and give a brief, informative introduction. Sex Drive is hilarious. That about sums it up, really. However, for the sake of taking up space and making my review look longer and smarter than it really is, I’m going to tell you a little more about it.

There are boobs, Amish boobs, sex jokes, sex, donuts, and a brief appearance by Fallout Boy. As you can tell from everything but the Fallout Boy appearance, which surprisingly doesn’t ruin the movie (I hate Fallout Boy), this move is awesome. Sure the whole road trip thing may be a little worn out, but it’s been a while since a road trip movie has been executed well and it’s honestly pretty refreshing to see one.
