[Movie Review] Nine

I’m sure  that if you’ve read my article on the Top 5 Films of the 2000’s, then you recognize my blatant hero worship of Daniel Day-Lewis. Characters like Daniel Plainview, Bill the Butcher, Hawkeye, and Christy Brown are so intimately personified by the man that I believe he could go method and play a rock and still make it a powerful performance. So, how does his latest film Nine stack up?

I’ll tell you. Poorly. Not because of DDL’s efforts, he is actually quite good as expected. It’s just that the film around him is so much less than the collection of its parts that it’s almost confusing how it got into such bad shape.

Obviously, this is a huge change of pace for DDL. In his last two major films he has played two very dark, very intense, very demanding characters. Here, we see him embody Guido Contini, an Italian film director who is struggling to prepare his next film “Italia”. Continue reading

[Game Review] The Beatles: Rock Band (Xbox 360)

System: Xbox 360 (Also available on PS3, Wii)
Developer: Harmonix
Publisher: MTV Games
Genre: Rhythm

After all is said and done, The Beatles are ultimately the most influential band in the history of music. Literally every musician is influenced by them in some small way, so it’s only fitting that they receive their own edition of Rock Band. The popular music game franchise that introduced drum and singing elements to the already successful Guitar Hero formula has added a new installment based on the career and music of The Fab Four.

I love Rock Band, and I love The Beatles. Predictably I got ahold of the game as soon as I possibly could. I’ve been basking in Beatles glory for about nine days now and trust me it is amazing. Continue reading

[Music Review] Son of Dave’s Wild West Show

The Solo Project of Benjamin Darvell, formerly of Crash Test Dummies, Son of Dave creates some of the most innovative yet familiar music I’ve ever encountered. Blending blues, hip hop, and touching on many other genres, Son of Dave’s o1, 02, and 03 are extremely modernized versions of the genres that music evolved from. But Son of Dave’s Wild West Show is a different beast all together, one that is almost impossible to connect to their other albums.

An unorthodox mash up of country, blues, and trance, Wild West Show proves that the greatest music is created when the confines of a genre are completely ripped away, letting the artist create whatever they like and testing the boundaries of their creativity. Continue reading

[Movie Review] The Lovely Bones

I have learned that in 2009, it’s better to have no expectations of a film than high ones. The year saw a parade of films I was greatly anticipating fall short of expectations, to the point that the entire year felt like one disappointment after the other at the cinema.

Alas, I have tried to learn to not follow films from pre-production through release because you only end up feeling let down when it doesn’t meet the lofty standards you have for it. I’m so glad this film wasn’t on my radar until a month ago, and even happier that it kept me on the edge of my seat the way it did. Continue reading

[Food Review] Taco Bell’s Beefy 5 Layer Burrito

For most of my life I’ve had a pretty casual opinion of Taco Bell. I always found it to be a moderately enjoyable fast food eating experience, but not one that would regularly make it to the top of my dining out list. That’s changed over the last year or so though, as their expansive collection of cheap menu items have been keeping my poor, emaciated ass alive.

So as a newly appointed fan  I was somewhat eager to try out the latest addition to their $.89 value menu, the Beefy 5 Layer Burrito, and I must say it was more than tasty enough to reach my moderately high expectations. Continue reading

[Everyview Update] New Year’s Resolution

Holy Cow, it’s a brand new year and… nothing feels any different.

Dammit. By now we should’ve had pollutant-free gasoline for 6¢/gallon to fuel our flying cars. Instead we’ve got war and a broken economy. I blame republicans and rap music.

Anyway, as is the case with every New Year, we are falsely promised a new beginning and presented with the opportunity to challenge ourselves to meet a New Year’s Resolution! We’ve heard them all. “I am going to lose weight,” “I am going to try harder in school,” “I am going to find a job,” “For every penguin I shave I will plant a seed in the city,” and the list goes on.

Of course, no one ever lives up to these hallow goals. Still, that doesn’t keep us from wanting to know what you’ve promised yourself to accomplish before 2011! Feel free to let us and everyone else know what goals you will be failing to meet this year in the comments section below!

[Movies] Pat’s Top Ten Movies So Far…

10. Shoalin Soccer
Quite an unorthodox movie to put on a favorites list. As a soccer player though, this movie is very funny to me in a lot of ways. Relatively unknown by most people, this movie has a pretty funny story.

9. Twelve Monkeys
Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt perform admirably in this post-apocalyptic world that has a distorted time-line. This movie keeps you guessing until the very end. Continue reading

[Book Review] “War Dances” by Sherman Alexie

Overview:

I don’t read as often as I’d like to. To be honest I’m one of those obnoxious a-holes who spends approximately 3 weeks out of the year reading, and the other 49 bragging about how smart I am for finishing a book or two.

That being said, even if I read a book a day, I cannot imagine I would discover a writer whose work I would find more engaging than Sherman Alexie’s. His emotion rich stories of the modern-day lives of Native Americans have always made it to the top of my admittedly small “must read” list, and he’s in top form with War Dances, his latest short-story collection.
