[Music Review] Phoenix “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”

You might not think you’ve heard of French band Phoenix, but I bet you have. There is a commercial currently on air produced by automobile staple Cadillac, and a Phoenix song from this very album is featured prominently in the advertisement, so much that the person driving the Caddy in the commercial is listening to Phoenix on their iPod in the car. But other than that, I would be surprised if this band had slipped through the more mainstream music cracks.

However, after listening to this 2009 album (as well as 2006’s It’s Never Been Like That) I can safely proclaim that as an outright tragedy, as this French quartet produces some of the catchiest, funnest, most upbeat Pop music in the World today. Continue reading

[Food Review] Kroger Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs

Recently I chronicled my disgusted infatuation with the occasionally horrendous, but consistently wallet-friendly Banquet Microwavable Meals. And while I stand behind by lackadaisical eating habits, there are just some special occasions where even the laziest of us want to treat ourselves to a nice meal. In my case, the definition of “nice” is limited to using the oven as opposed to the microwave.

So after some typical rowdy Friday night shenanigans (spending 25 minutes debating whether or not to do dishes or laundry before realizing, hey, I can do both!) I had worked up quite an appetite; an appetite which I felt only my seldom-used stove could alleviate.

Of course the appliance isn’t what makes or breaks a dining experience, and while there were various quality products I could have cooked in said appliance, Kroger’s Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs is not such a product. Continue reading

[Game Review] N.O.V.A. (iPhone)

System: iPhone
Developer:
Gameloft
Publisher:
Gameloft
Genre:
First Person Shooter

A lot of people have been said the iPhone would be a pitiful replacement for mobile gaming, they say. Touch interface alone cannot stand with the contending champs such as the DS or the PSP, they say. Well, Gameloft is here to prove whoever “they” may be wrong. N.O.V.A. was actually a well-hyped game for the iPhone leaving expectations quite high, but thankfully, N.O.V.A. lives up to every bit of it.

The story is pretty standard for a futuristic shooter. Your an ex-military soldier who gets drafted back into the fight to take care of some invading aliens. You follow the orders of an A.I. reminiscent of Cortana in Halo. You also have a suit kind of like the Mjolner armor. I feel like I know where some of the inspiration came from. Continue reading

[Energy Drink Review] Vuka: Awaken (Orange)

It is hard to find a properly balanced morning energy drink. Something that will get you going but won’t leave you in need of another boost four hours later. Drinks like Awake: Good Morning Energy immediately come to mind, but such beverages are few and far between.

Luckily for you early morning caffeine addicts, the good folks at Vuka: Intelligent Energy have got your backs. Their line of functional energy drinks feature formulas to help the everyman get through every part of his day, and the hazy morning commute to the job you hate so much is no different. Vuka: Awaken is meant to be a healthy, tasty wake up for people who crave a refreshing energy drink to start their day without worrying about crashing before lunch time.

[Music Review] Silversun Pickups “Swoon”

Describing Los Angeles based Silversun Pickups is a maddening task. They have a number of ingredients that sound quite familiar, but they also have a number of ingredients that are quite unique. On the surface, they’re an Alternative band that seems to pull quite a bit of their sound from The Smashing Pumpkins, but they also have elements that resemble Sonic Youth, and to some degree, a less theatrical Coheed and Cambria.

Their latest album, released in 2009 entitled Swoon is an interesting record to say the least. It’s a record that has grown on me during more recent listens, as initially I was disappointed with it as a whole. I felt that it was almost too pretentious on the surface. It felt very aware of itself, and each song seemed to swirl into phases of excess, and not the positive type. Continue reading

[Video Review] Show Me’s Restaurant and Sports Bar

Our first ever video review! Keep in mind that this review was really just practice. We’ve got our line of Everyview Video Review Shows on the way, and they’ll be much better than this, I promise. The camera work is awful and we just shot everything spontaneously with no planning. It’s not very entertaining, but still. It’s a video review. Enjoy.

Filmed in the recently opened Show Me’s of Terre Haute, Indiana.

[T.V. Review] Lost: The Final Season Premiere

Few shows achieve what Lost has been able to achieve. Not only does the show do gangbusters in ratings and have a freakishly devoted set of die-hard fans, but also has proven to be one of the best shows that has ever graced American Television. Hi, I’m Andrew, and I’m a Lostaholic.

My addiction to the show has only developed in the last year. I resisted because I was sure the show was all hype, a product of a lot of people wanting something to be awesome AND good at the same time. But it’s not hype at all. This show delivers week in and week out, and nothing proves that more than Tuesday nights Premiere Event on ABC. I’m glad I waited until the first four seasons were available on DVD, because otherwise I don’t think I could’ve handled the anticipation between episodes, because this show finds a way to wow you during every episode. Mass Effect 2

System: Xbox 360, PC
Developer: BioWare
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Genre: RPG

One month after stopping a race of large sentient machines from wiping out all life in the known universe Commander Shepard is used as a figurehead for humanity and subsequently put on bitch missions to kick the last of the Geth in their robotic nads. This is where Mass Effect 2 begins, and where one hell of a ride starts.

Mass Effect 2, from the start, is a major upgrade from the trilogy’s start. The game has a fresh feel, while still keeping very close in the realm of Mass Effect. Many, many changes have been made to the sequel, both good and bad in my opinion. The story has the same idea as ME1, but with several changes. The opening of the game has you scrambling to save Joker (Seth Green), everyone’s favorite crippled, wise talking pilot, as a menacing ship appears out of hyperspace and begins an assault. The end of the opening cinematic has Shepard floating through space, suit badly damaged, and oxygen failing. The crew escapes as Shepard is seen on a crash course with a nearby planet, thus Mass Effect 2 begins. Continue reading

[Music Review] Other Lives Self-Titled Album

In 2006, I discovered a band based out of Stillwater, Oklahoma called Kunek. Their music was a delicate balance of hopeful and depressing, uplifting and melancholy. I listened the Hell out of their album “Flight of the Flynns”, and found that the uniqueness of the sound the band created was unlike anything I’d heard before. Years later, I hadn’t heard anything from the band, so I did a quick Google search and found out they changed their band’s name to Other Lives.  They added some other elements to the core of Kunek, and that warranted a change in name. But, the question is, did the music suffer?
