[Game Review] Goldeneye 007 (Wii)

Fans have been clamoring for it for ages now, and it’s finally here. This game is a remake of the classic Goldeneye 007 video game released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997, and without a doubt revolutionized the FPS genre on home gaming consoles forever. It was that N64 game that would lay the framework for titles like Halo and Call of Duty, paving the road for their success.

And now, in the form of this Wii game by the same name, Goldeneye 007 exists again, modernized and completely rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of the Wii hardware. Developed by Eurocom, most known to Wii games as the devs who crafted the excellent Dead Space: Extraction, this modernized classic can be one of two things: a cheap cash in, or the real deal. Ladies and gentelemen, I’m here to tell you that not only is this game genuinely great, it may even be the best FPS the Wii has to offer.

[Movie Review] I’m Still Here (2010)

For those unfamiliar, I’m Still Here is the much discussed, yet virtually unseen documentary chronicling Joaquin Phoenix’s departure from acting into the world of hip-hop, which was proceeded by a string of bizarre public appearances, leading some to believe the movie was a hoax.

It turned out they were correct, as shortly after the film’s release, its director, Casey Affleck, revealed the film to be a fake. Despite knowing this, I still went into the movie with an open mind and tried to judge it on its own merits, ignoring that it wasn’t real.

Unfortunately, I found this to be impossible.

Knowing nothing was real made it seem like nothing was at stake. Whether its several failed attempts to get P. Diddy to produce his album, or him freaking out and crying about his infamous Letterman interview from 2009, how are we supposed to care about how devastated he is?

That’s not to say this couldn’t have been a good film, but the primary storyline which needed to be compelling for this to work simply wasn’t.

[Movie Review] Zombie Town (2006)

I’m not very good at running a website.

Why? I’ve had Zombie Town in my Netflix instant queue since well before Halloween, along with a handful of other zombie movies — all of which I planned on reviewing before the October 31st. Obviously, that didn’t happen. However, I did manage to view and review Gangs of the Dead before my self-imposed deadline, meaning I’m not completely awful at running a website.

Zombie Town is not a very good zombie movie. It attempts to accomplish feats such as scaring you, making you laugh, and forming a bond between the viewer and the film’s characters; all of which are necessary for a successful zombie movie, none of which the movie accomplishes. Zombie Town did manage to impress me with buckets of gore, some cheesy one-liners, and a Romeronian portrayal of the living dead, meaning it isn’t completely awful.

I also expect at least three people to read this, meaning I’m awful at getting my hopes up, just like I am at running a website.

[Movie Review] Catfish (2010)

The success of Catfish hinges greatly on your frame of mind when you sit down to watch it. If you think you’re going to get a bone-chilling docuhorror (ala Paranormal Activity or The Blair With Project as the trailer and subsequent marketing campaign would lead you to believe), you are going to be immensely disappointed. Catfish is never scary, frightening, or spooky.

What Catfish is, though, is perhaps greater than what it initially appears to be. It’s an engaging documentary (though I suppose some might dispute the complete veracity of the subject matter) that takes the social networking experience and sheds some light on how people willingly, and very easily, allow complete strangers into their lives. [Music Review] Kings of Leon “Come Around Sundown” Deluxe Edition

Kings of Leon exploded in 2009. Out of a cannon they shot to music super-stardom upon the enormous success of their album Only By The Night, and seemingly overnight they went from being alternatively popular to pop music juggernauts.

As is the case with most bands who rise to significance relatively early and somewhat suddenly, the potential to lay an egg on a follow-up to their mega successful album was great. It has happened dozens of times in music history, and I’m sure you have bands you got into only for them to engage in a career of mediocrity and disappointment following their biggest exposure.

It happened to The Killers after Hot Fuss. Two disappointingly decent albums later, and I’m still waiting for them to bounce back to form. Alanis Morrisette never found the formula to breaking the glass ceiling following the phenomenal Jagged Little Pill. Audioslave’s studio work went steadily downhill following their very good debut, and I think we’re all still wishing and waiting on The New Radicals to put out another album (Seriously, I totally am).

[Movie Review] Due Date (2010)

It happens all the time.

An actor transforms himself from an unknown whatever into a juggernaut, with every possible movie yearning for his skills. The new hot name on the comedy block is Zach Galifianakis.

The bearded wonder has been appearing in film after film since the immense success of the amazingly raucous The Hangover, and in 2010’s Due Date, Galifianakis is reunited with director Todd Phillips in what would appear to be another R-rated romp with the male species. Continue reading →

[Mobile Game Review] Radiant HD (Android)

I’m not going to lie to you, because you don’t deserve that. The Android platform has been really slow out of the gates as far as gaming is concerned. There is a vast level of difference between what you can find on the iPhone systems and what is available for Android users, with iPhone gaming options being far better.

However, with emerging developers like Hexage, who have a solid catalog of outstanding Android games available (Radiant being one of them), that gap is finally starting to close and Android users are finally able to get some decent gaming fixes on their phones.

[Food Review] Sunchips Monterey Jack and Sundried Tomato

Here’s a portion of David Roshinski’s review on DoesItHitTheSpot.com:

At first when chip hit my tongue, I got a rush of salt pour over my taste buds. This settles quickly as I get a lot of the flavors I mentioned from the smell. As chips go, they use a sun dried tomato powder to season them and the powder almost always contains buttermilk which gives the chips a nice tang. Now as far as the cheese flavor goes that’s where I was confused. Upon tasting the chip I got a really salty cheese flavor, no pun intended.

Monterey jack is more of a mild cheese that has a good flavor but is low on the salt scale. Looking at the package however I read there are many cheese used as seasoning: monterey, cheddar, monterey again, mozzarella, and blue cheese. Wu! That is a lot of cheeses. It is that combination that gave my taste buds some confusion. It still had a great flavor overall with the added nutty and grain flavors on the back part of the mouth after the salt and tang.

[Tech Review] HTC Evo 4G (Sprint)

A while back, I splurged at upgraded my mobile phone from a Blackberry 8330 t0 the HTC Hero from Sprint thinking it would be the phone that easily lasted me two years. You see, I have a very short attention span when it comes to technology, especially cell phones, and the BlackBerry operating system simply wasn’t doing it for me anymore. I wanted something more “modern,” so I got what was arguably at that time the best Android smartphone on the market; the HTC Hero.

As time went on, I had more and more problems with it. OS locking up, phone crashing, lackluster performance, slow application launching, running out of memory frequently and the list goes on. I loved the Android platform, and I loved the user interface HTC had built. It’s just that the phone couldn’t handle it, it was too weak.

So I decided to splurge yet again, and get the phone that I really want to last me for the next two years; the HTC Evo, which has been my cell phone wet dream for a long time. But now that I finally have it in my hands, is it everything I had hoped for?
