[Retro Game Review] Kaboom! (Atari 2600)

I’m not a player of modern video games, which is likely why I’m so soul-crushingly unpopular on this video game review site disguising itself as a haven offering “a view for everything.” Aside from not being able to afford modern systems, when I have found myself playing modern games, I find them to be too complex for their own good. So much detail is focused on graphics and intricate storylines that it almost seems irrelevant whether or not the game is fun or not. They make me nostalgic for older games which didn’t possess the eye-popping, visual “wow factor” of modern systems and had to get by on simply being fun.

Luckily for cry-baby cynics like me, hell bent on griping about the horrors of modern technology, games like Kaboom!, a staple of the Atari 2600, will always be around. Continue reading →

[Food Review] The Flying Cow from McDonald’s

Once in a great while a food so great, so cheap, and so filling comes into existence. Fellow food lovers, that time has cometh! I speak of the flying cow, a tasty and oh so filling meal in its own right. I’m sure you read this now in curiosity, or just so you can spite me in comments at the end, but either way you’re reading and that’s what matters!

The flying cow is a surprisingly simple sandwich to create. Factor in a price tag of about two dollars (depending on your use of a double cheeseburger or the “Mcdouble”) and it becomes something children and adults alike can enjoy.  I simply go to the nearest McDonald’s, and ask for a Double cheeseburger and a McChicken sandwich. Some may stop here saying “Hamburger AND a chicken sandwich? Pft get out of here!” but I will not be leaving. Continue reading →

[Game Review] Brutal Legend (Xbox 360)

Brutal Legend is the most recent project from comical genius Tim Schafer, the driving force behind critically acclaimed games like Psychonauts and Grim Fandango. Never heard of those games? I wish I couldn’t say this, but I’m not surprised.

For some reason Schafer’s games tend to go unnoticed by the general gaming public despite rave reviews, likely due to a severe lack of marketing push from Publishers. Chances are, though, that you’ve at least heard of Brutal Legend. This game has gotten plenty of attention from general gaming press and public as well as music-centered publications thanks to a stellar heavy metal theme and all-star voice cast. Continue reading →

Worst to Best: Saw

There are a lot of Saw movies, and I’m here to separate the worst from the best. As we all know the 6th movie released on the 23rd which means I should have a review shortly. Eventually, when the next movie is released next year, I’ll do a review of that one as well. There is also an eighth movie slated for 2011, but I probably won’t do a review on that because by then I will have been in a very tragic accident while looking at Facebook Mobile while driving.

[Doubleshot Movie Review] Paranormal Activity (Theatrical)

It isn’t too often that a low-budget independent film gets the amount of hype and sees the amount of success Paranormal Activity has found. After its premier and its initial positive impressions as well as a few shots of audience reactions the internet film whores began building a hype train that no one could stop. An online feature that allowed people around America to “Demand” the film be brought near them showed staggering results, and as a result the movie is now playing in theaters nation-wide.

Unable to resist the hype, both Zac Pritcher and John Rogers decide to spend their hard earned money on a trip to local cinema to see if it’s worth all it has been cut out to be. Continue reading →

The first LostWinds is widely considered one of, if not the absolute best games the WiiWare has to offer. Featuring gorgeous visuals, creative controls, and an absolutely fresh premise, no one could argue that LostWinds was anything short of spectacular (besides those douchebags at GameSpot, that is). [Movie Review] Where The Wild Things Are (Theatrical)

Maurice Sendak’s Children’s Book Where The Wild Things Are is a staple of young childhood in the United States, as well as all across the world. A simple book containing fanciful illustrations of an imaginary world created when the main character, Max, gets sent to bed without his dinner. The book very concisely describes the adventure of Max and his imagination.

Since the book is fewer than 20 pages, I was curious to see what the film added to the book to create the cinematic experience. It turns out that not only did they add more material, but they also added a wealth of character development, emotion, and visual sensation to ensure everyone in the audience went home with a smile.
