Review: Dear Science by TV On The Radio

tv-on-the-radio-dear-scienceOverview:

Two years ago, TV On The Radio was on the verge of becoming one of my favorite bands. Then came the night of March 8, 2007. I purchased a ticket to see them perform at The Vogue Theater in Indianapolis (aka: the Sodom and Gomorra of the Midwest). The Vogue is a 21+ venue, which shouldn’t have been a problem because I was 22 at the time. However, my driver’s license had expired, making me ineligible to get in, even though I had documented proof I was old enough to enter the putrid venue. So the evening ended with my “friends” watching the show while leaving me to sit alone in the car for over three hours.

Since then, I had been reluctant to listen to this band. While it was in no way their fault (in fact, I met two band members while waiting for my “friends” to exit) listening to them just brought back memories of that cruddy night. This reason, mixed with my non-existent cash flow, made me reluctant to purchase their new album “Dear Science.” After several months, I finally bit the bullet and bought it. After a few listens, I can officially say that all is forgiven.

PackRat Paragraphs: Turntable Belt Buckle

Remember last week’s PackRat Paragraphs when I showed you guys the flask belt buckle but told you I also bought another, much cooler buckle? Well here it is, gaze in awe and amazement at my solid bling turntable belt buckle.

Yeah, I know it’s way too fresh and I’m way too white, but it’s wicked awesome anyway. I love standing at the end of the register bagging groceries at work and saying “Wik-wikka-rikka-tik Hel wikka-tik Hello! D-d-did you fin-rikka fi-fi-find everikka-tikka-ty thing alrikka-tikka-right?” Yeah I’m a total douche, but I don’t care. I love it.

The dreams in which im dying are the best I’ve ever had…

While i was browsing music because of the ever so relentless boredom that plagues me all too much these days. I searched mad world because it’s a good song and this Kiwi popped up and changed my views on some certain obstacles. This neat little video actually gave me a lot of inspiration. I’m sure you will eventually understand that no matter what physical barrier lies in the way of your goals, you can fly over it.

Hip Hop Harmonica

This is a video of me beatboxing the harmonica live at a Bogey’s show as a warm-up for local band Nate (article soon, I swear). It’s not very long and I messed up a couple times, but it’s still pretty sweet.

It’s just a short little ditty, not an actual song or anything. It’s groovy none-the-less. Beatboxing harmonica is the greatest discovery since the noodle maker or condoms. Haven’t decided which.

Jan. ’09 Indie Band of the Month: On My Honor

Here we are in a brand new month and you all know what that means: A new Indie Band of the Month Award is being handed out to an awesome independent band that you should all know about. Last month a band called The Marys won the first ever Everyview award and now we’re here with On My Honor, the first band of 2009 to win the prize.

omh

On My Honor is a four-piece power pop/punk band fronted by lead singer Drew Justice and backed by guitarist and vocalist Lucas Sams, bassist David Fear, and drummer Josh McCulley. The boys hail from Knoxville, Tennessee where they regularly perform for over 300 dedicated fans. When the band’s not kicking it in their hometown they spend their time running tours across the country, which is probably what helped them get featured on a Future Destination Records Compilation. In 2008 alone, for instance, they embarked on 3 tours spanning 30 states, from New York down to the Gulf of Mexico and everywhere along the way.

Sunburst Summer Live @ The THMV

A little over a week ago I was invited out to the Terre Haute Music Venue to watch a local band called Sunburst Summer, who I’ve actually seen once before when they played with Brave Souls and was pleasantly surprised. This was their second show, and again they’ve surprised me on multiple fronts. The band is fronted by David Clark pulling lead vocals, backed by guitarists and backup vocalists Aaron Norris and Jordan Daley, Caleb Mustin on bass, and Marc Pemberton on the skins.

Dec. ’08 Indie Band of the Month: The Marys

The first band to win Everyview’s Indie Band of the Month Award is The Marys, an awesome indie band stationed in Atalanta, Georgia.

breakers2

First debuting in the Spring of 2004, The Marys is a 4-piece indie rock band heavily influenced by old time rock and roll. Consisting of members Bernard and Brian Balatbat, Mike Baldemor, and Rob Belom, The Marys have evolved a sound that resembles sort of a mix between Jet, AC/DC, and The Kinks with heavy influence from The Strokes, Velvet Revolver and of course, The Beatles. Brave Souls Live at Wesleyan Church

I was recently invited to do coverage for a local Christian band called Brave Souls at the Northside Wesleyan Church here in Terre Haute. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to help get the word out about some more talented local musicians. I arrived with my camera in hand and left thoroughly impressed with some killer footage, ringing ears and, believe it or not an improved religious outlook, which is exactly what the band set out to accomplish.

Unlike previously covered band Caught in the Headlights, which is composed of some talented up and coming new comers to the Terre Haute music scene, most of Brave Souls’ members are seasoned veterans and it shows. The band consists of Travis ,Matt Buell on bass, Bryar Nevins and Jeremy on guitar, David on keyboards, and Adam slamming the skins.

Caught in the Headlights at Bogey’s

Caught in the Headlights is a great upsart local metal band fronted by Alex Reid and backed by guitarists Kevin Doti and Austin Horsley, bassist Mitch Cartwright and drummer Pepy Maloba. I was commissioned to record their performance at Bogey’s Family Fun Center last Friday and came away with what I felt was a surprisingly satisfying performance from these fine young gentlemen.

Here they are performing a cover of Entombment of the Machine by Job for a Cowboy:

The most surprising element of the bands performance was hands down Reid’s aggressive vocals. If you listen to him talk after the songs you would never think he would be capable of spitting out such demonic growls and sick pig squeals. The rest of the band was also able to pull off their cover with ease showing their dedication to learning material they know fans want. But what about original songs? Here they are playing their own property, Run Away:
