[Video Game News] Guild Wars 2 Trailer

Despite the fact that I never really got into the first Guild Wars, this trailer has me genuinely excited for the MMO sequel. It shows off the new locations, some pretty impressive graphics, in-game footage, and five races including Humans, Norns, Asuras, Charrs, and Silvarians joining forces to fight a malicious dragon foe named Zhaitian.

I can’t say Guild Wars 2 is going to be a day one purchase or anything, but it definitely earned a spot on my radar.

nyxquestOverview:

System: Wii

NyxQuest started life out as Icarian, and since the first few screenshots and tidbits of information were revealed Wii gamers have been keeping an eye on this unique platformer. It was originally rumored to be heavily influenced by the classic NES game Kid Icarus by IGN, but now that they game is finally here it’s plain to see they were very wrong. Just as they always are about anything Kid Icarus related.

Anyway, NyxQuest: Kindred spirits is finally here. Is it worth your hard earned Wii points, or is it just another piece of dumpsterware being shovelled onto the system? Continue reading

[Game News] Club Nintendo Elite Prizes Revealed

mario hat club nintendo rewardThis morning I woke up to an email from Nintendo regarding information concerning Club Nintendo Members who reached either Gold or Platinum status. I had reached Platinum status shortly after the service launched by registering my entire catalog of first-party Nintendo games and spent my coins only on a set of Mario-themed Hanafuda cards, which I still have no idea how to use.

I was very excited to see what Nintendo would be offering their most loyal customers as rewards for purchasing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars worth of first-party games. I don’t know for sure what I was expecting, but I was anticipating something fairly awesome to show off for being such a hardcore geek.

Then I was disappointed. Continue reading

[Game News] GTA: Chinatown Wars Loses DS Exclusivity, Heads to PSP

A short while ago we posted a review of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the first game in Rockstar’s renowned open world franchise to come to the Nintendo DS, and it was exclusive to boot. Emphasis on the word was.

gtachinatownwarspspIn a strange out-of-nowhere move, Rockstar has announced that they will be taking the critically acclaimed DS game to the PSP. I am almost positive that this decision was made the game’s disappointingly low sales numbers, but I’m not sure the game is going to do any better on the PSP. Continue reading

[Game Review] Swords & Soldiers (WiiWare)

Overview:

swordsandsoldierswiiSystem: Wii (WiiWare Exclusive)
Developer: Ronimo Games
Publisher: Ronimo Games
Genre: RTS (Real Time Strategy)

Real Time Strategy games and consoles generally don’t mix well. A handful of buttons and a couple of analog sticks just don’t emulate the feel of a keyboard and mouse when it comes to the RTS genre. There’s just too much going on all at once. Too many troops to micro-manage, to many resources to mine, too many enemy bases to destroy, and too many dimensions (three) to move through.

But what if you simplified that formula and put it on the Wii? What if there were only a handful of troops that managed themselves, one resource to mine, never more than a few bases to destroy, and everything was given to you from a 2-d sidescrolling perspective? And the pointer could be used exactly as a mouse pointer. Would it work? Continue reading

[Mobile Game Review] Castlevania: Order of Shadows (Blackberry)

Overview:

castlevania bb startIt’s hard to find good action games on mobile phones. It’s even harder to find a good cellular adaptation of your favorite established gaming franchises. Games on mobile phones are almost always hard to play, hard to look at, and hard to convince yourself to spend $10 on something you’ll likely regret.

I know first hand from my experience with Resident Evil: Genesis that relying on name recognition alone isn’t enough to make a decision when browsing through the overwhelming amount of crappy games you can download to your BlackBerry, a phone that has never been known for having good games to begin with. Continue reading

[Game Review] Mario Kart Wii

Overview:

mario-kart-wii-boxMany of us (young people) have probably played a version of Mario Kart at some point in our lives, on N64, Game Cube, or another Nintendo product. The game was just one of those that was simple and fun and could be played as multi-player easily and effectively engage a group of people.

The Wii takes that to another level. Continue reading

[Game News] New Metroid Game Announced at E3 2009

metroidFor those of you don’t know (all of you), I am a HUGE fan of the Dead or Alive series. So when I heard the new Metroid game for the Wii was being developed by Team Ninja, the people responsible for DoA and Ninja Gaiden, I punch-danced all over my house for about a half hour. Team effing Ninja. Continue reading
