[Food Review] Ben and Jerry’s Boston Cream Pie Ice Cream

Nothing is more iconic of a dessert in Massachusetts than the Boston cream pie. What is it exactly? Well, it’s an absolutely delicious pastry cream sandwiched between two light yellow cake halves with a chocolate icing spilled over it. The Boston cream pie was originally conceived at the Boston Parker House Hotel in Boston by French chef, M. Sanzian.

The packaging proudly states “Vermont’s finest” and has a picture of the dessert, a speech bubble to the home team, and the Paul Revere Statue. Each serving is one half cup, which is the standard serving size for ice cream. It contains 250 calories, 13 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, 90 milligrams of cholesterol, 29 grams of carbohydrates, and 26 grams of sugar. Which is just a bit more than one slice of the actual dessert. But you don’t care about that. Even if you did, your figure has nothing to do with why you’re eating this ice cream, does it?

[Food Review] Sunchips Monterey Jack and Sundried Tomato

At first when chip hit my tongue, I got a rush of salt pour over my taste buds. This settles quickly as I get a lot of the flavors I mentioned from the smell. As chips go, they use a sun dried tomato powder to season them and the powder almost always contains buttermilk which gives the chips a nice tang. Now as far as the cheese flavor goes that’s where I was confused. Upon tasting the chip I got a really salty cheese flavor, no pun intended.

Monterey jack is more of a mild cheese that has a good flavor but is low on the salt scale. Looking at the package however I read there are many cheese used as seasoning: monterey, cheddar, monterey again, mozzarella, and blue cheese. Wu! That is a lot of cheeses. It is that combination that gave my taste buds some confusion. It still had a great flavor overall with the added nutty and grain flavors on the back part of the mouth after the salt and tang.

Drinking liquid nitrogen would be a stupid idea.

Drinking Liquid Nitro? Now that’s completely different. This little-known gem of an energy drink isn’t a deadly chemical that freezes things on contact, but instead an energy supplement chock full of all sorts of herbs. I’ve heard of it before, but never ran across it until I was in Big Lots the other day, performing my weekly search for great deals on wasabi peas, cans of sardines, and unique energy drinks.

Here’s an intro(duction) of a list of what Casual Clay Cunningham believes to be “The Five Most Unnecessary Candy Concoctions of All Time from DIHTS:

Everyone likes candy, as it often proves to be a valuable asset when trying to harness the energy to get your fat ass from one meal to the next. But of course, not all of our convenience/grocery store options are of high quality, and choosing a bad snack can be outright depressing.

But sometimes when dealing with candy, sight can prove to be as strong a depressant as taste. There’s always at least that one brand you see that just baffles you. Candies you can’t comprehend anyone with an ounce of free will choosing to buy. Candies whose boxes are always filled to the brim, because why even bother adjusting for the expiration date?

This is my “tribute” to what I feel are the five candies most deserving of the scornful comments above. The five I look at and think “life’s too short.”

[Drink Review] Bossa Nova: Goji Berry with Tart Cherry

A while back I posted a review for my first ever Bossa Nova drink, and I was very impressed with it. So impressed in fact, that instead of drinking the rest of the samples Bossa Nova sent me, I instead stocked up on the Mangosteen flavor I reviewed, and have been drinking that until today, when I finally ran out.

Now I’m moving on to the next flavor, carefully chosen by blindly grabbing around inside of my mini fridge and taking out the first one I touched, Goji Berry with Tart Cherry. I was actually pretty disappointed with my selection, only because I was in a very Blueberry-y mood. Oh well, there’s nothing I could’ve done about it.

[Energy Drink Review] Crunk!!! (Original)

A while back I reviewed a product called Crunk Stix. I didn’t like them. I thought there was a decent amount of potential behind them, but energy powders are very similar to energy shots before they were perfected. The idea is awesome: super portable and convenient energy in a similar form factor to Pixi Stix. The problem? Awful aftertaste and bitterness plague what would otherwise be a revolutionary energy product.

Anyway, along with the Stix, Crunk sent me a case full of different flavors of their drink. I’ve been slowly working my way through it, tasting each flavor. I’m about to go through my last can of the original flavor, making this the perfect time to review it. I’ve experienced it several times, so I’ve got a pretty solid grasp of how it performs.

Readers, I ask you this simply because I am an incompetent moron who can’t think of original jokes: Is it time to get “Crunk?”

[Food Review] Sunchips (Monterey Jack and Sundried Tomato)

It is a chip made from the sun! Ok, no it isn’t, but Sun Chips have been around for a while, and are know as a healthier alternative to the traditional potato chip.

The company, which is under the portfolio of Frito-Lay Inc. in Texas, has teamed up with the sub giant, Subway, to produce an exclusive flavor for all the shops. This is going along side the Subway Fiery Foot Long promotion and all the chip bags contain a game code for it. I recently purchased these to add to the free sub I earned with my Subway points.

The claims on the package are that the chips have a great multigrain taste. I had to agree, the multigrain gives a nutty flavor that is almost as pleasant as the texture it gives. The next claim is each 1 oz. serving has 18g of whole grains which have been known as part of a healthy diet to reduce the risk of heart disease.

[Drink Review] Sunkist Solar Fusion

Energy sodas aren’t exactly the fastest growing phenomenon in the drink industry, but that doesn’t keep the big beverage companies, who deem them as more accessible than regular energy drinks, from trying them out. Coke has Vault, Pepsi has Pepsi Max, and now Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up offer the latest take on the energy soda in the form of Sunkist Solar Fusion.

Solar Fusion is a Tropical Mandarin flavored soda with added caffeine and B vitamins. Sunkist is most well-known for their orange soda, which is absolutely delicious. However, not every Sunkist drink is worth drinking. Their Peach, Grape and Diet Lemonade flavors are all pretty awful, but they’ve also got Cherry Limeade, Pineapple and Strawberry which are pretty solid drink. How does Solar Fusion stack up to the rest of the Sunkist family?

[Restaurant Review] Miko’s Cafe

There are three things that I love about Sundays: a nice long drive with no traffic, acoustic versions of great songs on the radio, and a really good, hearty breakfast. Today I got to do all three on the way home north of Boston.

Miko’s was a nicely designed and decorated café with three sections, small tables up front, larger tables and booths in the middle and the diner counter with high backs where I sat in the back. At the counter there was a brilliantly ornate antique cash register more for show than function. Up top in the inlay was a large flat screen TV that softly chirped the news and built into the counter was a very appropriately placed foot rest.
